Anyone have experience building a hackintosh? I've built 5 or 6 PCs so I have a little knowledge but no means an expert. Its going to be a mini-ITX, ivy i5, with 8 gigs ram. No ssd or anything; its for my girl who only uses inDesign so she wouldn't even notice. Any serious pitfalls I should be aware of?
I built one a couple of years back and it's not that difficult. The most important thing is to choose hardware that is compatible with whatever build of OS X that you're going to use. I think that the latest and greatest is 10.8 Mountain Lion. Go to tonymacx86.com, hackintosh.com and lifehacker.com for updated compatibility lists (for motherboards, GPU's, ect.) buying guides and installation guides. http://www.tonymacx86.com/325-building-customac-buyer-s-guide-january-2013.html#mini http://www.tonymacx86.com/325-building-customac-buyer-s-guide-january-2013.html#mini_deluxe
I built one, too. Actually, I made it so that my main PC (i7) could dual-boot as Hackintosh or Windows. First of all, it confused the shit out of my family when they walked up to a Mac - expecting a PC. Also, since I have two video cards in SLI, it confused the Hackintosh. You can make it work, but you have to run one video card, boot the Hackintosh OS and then make some tweaks. Then you can put it back together and it boots fine. There's a few strange things that may not work because there aren't drivers. I couldn't my Audigy sound card to work. I had to pull it and just use on-board sound. I also had some issues with my mouse. I found a work-around for that by spending $15 for some software. If I went with the recommended motherboard and hardware from the websites that Bender recommended, I would have had no problems. What is amazing is that that you can literally save thousands of dollars by doing the Hackintosh. In fact, some things about my rig were actually better than an Apple PowerMac... and it was like $2000 cheaper. I would say that you can expect to do a little more support on the Hackintosh and of course you don't get the Apple service. However, I think it's a great idea. Go for it.
Who would choose to run a MAC? I don't get it for any reason. And please do not tell me you want to be able to run "Final Cut Pro." MACs are a status symbol. HR SVP lady at my office asked for a top of the line Macbook Pro. Something like $3000. We received it, hooked it up to AD and it was running really well. We gave it to her and she said, "What is this?" We said, "Your Mac you wanted." She is like, "How do I use it?" We were like, "Isn't this what you asked for?" She said, "Why doesn't it have Windows on it?" We all face palmed. True story. At least people who walk by her office think she is using a MAC, when in fact she has a $3000 Windows 7 laptop that she uses for email and spreadsheets. TLDR; MACs are for doucheberries.
*sigh* Every GF should have a Mac so you are not bothered with the maintenance that a regular computer illiterate FaceBooker/Twitzor cant perform "cuz they are not nerds.."
Got my dad to get a MAC for is photoediting...just so I don't have to deal with when he breaks his computer
Should have got him a Macbook Wheel... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BnLbv6QYcA also this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AyVh1_vWYQ
Haha EXACTLY my thoughts mighty . But seriously, I'm an audio engineer and any studio worth it's salt is going to have a Mac Pro in there. Much more stable than a PC in terms of audio drivers. Other than that I agree it is a status symbol. I think I built my i7 pc for like 1500, and the (less capable) Mac version would have been 2300+ lol
Also, good call Bnder. I was on there looking at the builds. Decided to post here instead of reading their forums haha
@butsecs: rrrright on bro! I have a lot of music producing friends and they all use Macs for that exact reason. When people are using a Mac cuz its the right tool for the job I can only support that decision a 100%. The smarter ones will build one themselves (or have it build by a more tech-savy person) for the simple fact that you can have indeed more power for half the price. MBPs are different in that, since it's pretty hard to find all the parts to build yourself a notebook.. Nevertheless, dumb fucks should definitely use Macs, especially people like the twat Shark mentioned. I'ld be glad to sell them an overpriced piece of hardware and refer to a geniusbar for support on a Win7 everyday. lol'ed hard btw..
