Hey, cuties. And Elmo. I'm out of school this semester, without a job or a car, and have about $20 to last me until somewhere I applied to decides to call me. At the moment, this gives me a bit of time, which I've put into watching the History Channel, reading The Call Of Chthulhu, and playing Call Of Duty 2. I'm not a UAN member, but I do enjoy spending my time here, with all of you taints, when I'm being a lazy bum. So, I'd like to make some sort of contribution to UAN with what I have -- a lot of free time. Seeing all the new custom maps on the server, I thought I could try my hand there and possibly become a part of a UAN mapping team. Going with the topic title.. Can I create custom COD2 maps with my crappy computer? AMD64 Athlon 2800+ 1GB RAM GeForce 5500FX with 256MB RAM Should I create custom COD2 maps with my crappy computer? My only previous experience with level editing was using an editor called JED for the game Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. I never finished a map, partly because I strived for perfection, and partly because... no one played the game anymore. The computer that I began using that editor on could hardly handle it, and it kept crashing when I first started editing; that's why I asked if my specs could even handle creating maps. How do I ... ... with my crappy computer? I can find a bunch of disjoined sites with tutorials on mapping specifics for the game, but I can't find any good general "getting started" articles for total n00bs. Any help with this would be appreciated. If it turns out that I don't have the skillz or resources for mapping, I also have slight experience streaming SHOUTcast servers, so I could lay some phat b34ts down with a UAN Radio. Though, I'm guessing most people would rather listen to in-game noise and/or ventrilo... and if not, they might want to listen to their own music instead of killing their ping by connecting to the radio server. Oh well, just throwing in some suggestions.
HA! omni, welcomee back. Your situation sounds like mine was last winter. if you want to make some CoD2 maps, I suggest you check out www.modsonline.com. They have tutorials and forums dedicated to mapping and editing. You can find step-by-step instructions from the basic "what do I neeed to start" to more advanced coding. Your computer can definitely handle it. i think it would b great if UAN had a mapper! and with call of duty, you don't need anything even close to perfect.
Thanks, Elmo. I've looked through that site some.. but the COD2 tutorials on the site were beyond my current comprehension of level editing. The forums seem like a good place to go to for help, though all the jargon was greek to me. But, I downloaded the official modding tools for COD2, which included COD2 Radiant. Being an absolute n00b and putting the pieces together, I'm assuming Radiant is used for editing levels in a variety of similar games with similar engines. I'm thinking I should find absolute general tutorials on using Radiant, and that should work fine, except for a few specifics. And then there's just conceptualizing a nice, perhaps semi-historical level that makes for varied and balanced multiplayer gameplay. I'm very, very new to this and have a lot of work ahead of me. Maybe I'll get the hang of this stuff by the time COD3 rolls around. ;D Looks like the same old crap in a brand new package. Anyone else in UAN ever used Radiant before?
Omni, I am glad to see that there is another person on here that is atleast slightly interested in Mapping for COD2. The right place to start is the site that Elmo gave you... MODSonline.com Here is the link to all of the COD2 Tutorials (if you haven't already found them: COD2 Tutorials First, you're gonna wanna watch the intro movie that one of the guys put together on the complete basics of level desigh in Radiant (aka COD2 Modtools). Everything from installing the Modtools, to creating a basic skybox, and of course dropping in lights and spawn points are covered in this Tut. Also compiling the .map file, is covered. Everything you need to do a "basic" map...it is actually quite easy to follow, even if the guy seems a little dorky. You will need Quicktime to view this, so DL that first of course. Usually I don't like Quicktime, but it is totally worth it to view this Tut. Also, you will need to register with MODSonline.com to get the downloadable video. Get that movie "Here". Just follow the dudes instructions, and in no time you will be running around in your own map. I hope this helps, and if you need any other help. PM me or post in this topic. You may find that there are some quirky parts to the Modtools, because it is quite unstable...I have experienced random crashes while working on my maps. So, of course save often and more often. It also has an automatic save every 10 minutes which is nice just in case you forget. And if you want to get even more advanced follow the more advanced tutorials. You may find that you want to get into Maya if you want to do more advanced Model designs. This of course along with creating custom textures is way more advanced and I am still figuring these out. Best,
