ha! so, you know I purchased a new laptop not too long ago, and befiore that, I upgraded my Desktop's GPU, HDD and RAM. Well, I sold my laptop and am looking to upgrade the PC a little more majorly this time. I'm talking new Mobo/CPU B) (RAM if need be) I have been reading up the past few days on procs, but there are so many out there that I have no idea at all what to get. I bought my PC in 2003 with a P4 2.8Ghz +HT, so pretty much anything is an upgrade. It's my understanding that AMD has been a long time favorite especially for those of you who overclock, etc. I am merely looking for something that I can drop in and run without a ton of screwing around. WGAF about over-clocking <_< I am looking to keep my mobo/cpu cost under $800 USD, but, I do-do stupid things. I will be readign a lot I'm sure, but am Interested to read your thoughts on: single vs. dual vs. quad core AMD vs. Intel (current) Supposedly, the new intel chips surpass the new AMD's, but are out of my price range. My laptop was a 2ghz Core 2 Duo, and i was not impressed really. explain to me how "2, 1ghz cores" are supposed to outperform any single core. The only notice benefit over my old Desktop was that it could run multiple programs with no troubles. As far as running games, I could connect to a BF2 server and be playing in ~30 seconds (US) where as my Desktop took about 4-5 minutes. CoD2 hated my laptop and my desktop ran it way better on a 6600gt 128mb vs 7400go 256mb
I have always been an AMD fanboy. I built an C2D (which happens to also stand for crash to desktop) system about 2 weeks ago. It was so awesome. Even for the lowend e6300. As far a quad core chips go, there is not a big enough difference in performance to warrant paying such a high premium yet. For video, I would go with a 7600 or 7900 GT is preferable but GS will work Go for an Asus cheap single PCIe 965 chipset or higher. Make sure you get RAID if you intend to use it (you do intend to use it right) For hard drives, if you dont need a lot of space then get 2 80GB Hitachi SATA2 drives and RAID0 those bitches for fast load times and etc... As far as ram goes, I would get something with halfway decent timings running at 667 or 800. If you go 667 get 2x 1GB...(for bragging rights if nothing else) By buying an asus board, you can ignore the whole 1.8v @ 5-5-5-12 limit. Im running 4-4-4-12 @ 2.2v right now... I would get an Antec power supply, I have 5 TruepowerII's that I love! Overall, this should add up to about 750-950 depending on where you go.
If your at all looking into the overclocking with the cpu's the core 2 line is far above any amd processor. Now for shear power i would say the intel but many will say AMD. Overall though if your looking for any sort of overclock on some good air cooling then the core 2's will suprise you with some going over 50% overclocks quite stabaly. Hell if you want to dish out the cash to you can try the Intel Core 2 QX6700 2.66Ghz 8MB L2cache Quad Core. Maybe i have no idea what im talking about but for CPU im an intel guy lately.
Intel for sure. Check out my post here. My CPU and MOBO only cost me $300 and $215, respectively. The DDR2 RAM was $300 though... :unsure: But, well worth it. I basically am running my 6600 at the same frequency as a stock X6800... for $600 cheaper... Me likey. C2 Duos give you way more bang for your buck. Hope this helps. Best,

Yeah a good mixture of both will happen. Perhaps it would just be best to leave the smart remarks and general silliness to the crap section, that way if you feel the need to do that you can, and if you don't want to read that or deal with it, you don't have to. Also, as far as I can tell, every topic usually ends up being nonsense after a while, and it has seemed to me at least to have been that way for quite a while, I don't know why people are suddenly offended by it..
