cod2 crashes when launched

Ok after not playing cod2 for a few weeks, I wanted to do a few rounds this evening.
Unfortunately when I started the game my screen goes black for a few seconds, and than returns to desktop, without any warning, error or anything like that...
any ideas?

Maybe try removing all the non stock IWD files in the main folder?? IDK, just a thought.

oh yeah, make sure xfire is closed

i have had the same problem 2 times.. it had something to do with a windows update,, only i dont remember what it is again :blink: i gonna search it for you :afro:

It has nothing to do with xfire, thats for sure, I tried running cod2 with every unecessary service shut down.
I reinstalled the game and dx files, I never changed any setting in my graphics card's drivers.
Problem is punkbuster, when I try to switch pb on, the game exits at once. I tried setting seta sv_punkbuster and seta cl_punkbuster to "1"in the config_mp file, the game wont even launch at all....
ehm anyone an idea?

Thanks for offering your assistance but i solved it.
The problem is caused by the same windows update Austin powers mentioned above. I removed it and now its fine again. Took me 6 weeks tho.
btw im using a mini image :alucard:

i just had a weird thing where i deleted my profiles and when i turned on pb it would crash immediatly

sounds familiar somehow...

Ha hell yeah Im back. I just got so mad about cod2 not running properly again, and I also was busy finding a new job, but im back now

Me too - sucks being laid off. But good at the same time.
