As of about 2 days ago for no reason my computer started running like shit. Idle it runs fine no excess memory usage cpu running around 5% and no problems whatsoever but as soon as i try running anything that would remotely require my computer to do a job the CPU usage spikes to 100% and the process still has troubles. Take COD2 for example, i previously ran it at 1440x900 textures all high with about a 40-80 frame rate but now on 640x480 textures low and everything else low im getting 15-30 frames. I tried watching some shit in HD which was fine before but the video lags like hell now. The most basic of games and shit ive tried are running like crap. I tried cleaning my whole computer up defraged CCleaner virus scans and the whole deal but no luck improving at all. It seems like my processor is just running at about a third what its supposed to for unknown reasons. Im running on a Pentium M 1.73Ghz, Radeon X300, 1GB ram
Find out what Process is running the CPU @ 100% and post back.... Also is this a laptop? If it's One of the SVC Hosts running @ 100% it may be a virus. Another possibility is that your HDD is failing and your cpu is taking up the slack by reducing your page file down to a minimum.
No the thing is its any process. Idle im fine but if i start up cod2 it uses up every bit of CPU it can or if i use a media player or if i encode (would anyways). It seems like cod2 is trying to pull as much out of the CPU as possible but its barely getting anything even though it says 100%. I first thought it was a virus but ya i checked and the only processes that use alot of CPU are the ones i start up. Oh also things that barely used anything before use alot. Say taskmanager used like 1-5% while running it now uses like 11-20% or having opera open even idling uses 30% of my CPU.
check your temps and run memtest for a while if nothing comes back bad then use autoruns hide microsoft signed code and uncheck anything you deem unnessesary... reboot, and check your performance btw, opera sucks balls, and you should probably remove all your hentai before defragging...

In addition to what Funions said: Find out what brand name your HDD is (Dell Laptop, I'mma guess it's either a Toshiba or Hitachi/IBM) Test it with the MANUFACTURER'S Test. if it passes, Boot to "Safe mode with Networking" (F8 on startup for the recovery menu) Open Opera/IE/FF/ w/e, See where your cpu% is at. If it's low, you got some form of malware sucking the life out of your pc. Also... If your cpu usage goes up, but the temp stays low there's a good chance that it's the HT virtual cpu that's being raped (stupid intel with their pretend cpu's...), In either case a clean install of the OS will resolve all these issues If the pc passes both the ram and HDD tests. W00T.

AND... close that little windows and then click on delete files, CHECK THE BOX THAT SAYS "DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT" and click ok. 9 If you think you have a trojan on your computer google a program called "STINGER"its made by McAfee. 10 The only other thing i can think of is to press CTRL+ALT+DEL and close most of the programs that you recognise that you dont want to run, it might take a trial and error with a few reboots but once u worked out which ones are imporatnt and which ones are not then thats for your extreme beneift. 11 another thing is windows xp uses a theme try and change that back to the standard theme... but that will only help a slight bit compared to everything else that i have mentioned.
