My old (like 8 years old) computer is having issues booting up. It keeps restarting during the windows setup process. I tried to tell it to boot up in safe mode but still it restarts .... what suggestions do you have for me?
<div class='quotetop'>CITA</div> can you describe your hardware please? , CPU, ram, motherboard, HD (IDE or SATA), etc. because your problem could be: memory (ram) , reheated cpu, powersupply , HD badsectors or trouble with some drivers for SATA.
By "setup" do you mean you are trying to reinstall windows? Or is it a normal system boot up? Does it show the Windows Loading screen (Blue bar sliding back and forth from right to left? Does it restart at that point? If so, then you have a boot loop going on. One or more of your Windows system files are corrupt and or missing (i.e., Spyware, virus, etc,). Although you may be able to fix your OS by finding which files are missing/corrupt and recopying them manually...probably the easiest and fastest way is to do a reinstall. Make sure you back up all you data first...by hooking your drive to another computer or you can get a Hard Drive Enclousure kit, like this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1174694191807 With this you can connect a PATA drive (IDE) to any computer with an USB port. Very nice and makes it function like an External Hard Drive. I use this tool almost everyday. Once you get your data off, do a Re-install of XP or Vista...whichever you are using. I hope this helps. boot to your xp cd then run recovery console when it gets to the c:\windows prompt, type in chkdsk /p /r this will take a little while, but it will probably work i would say 8/10 bsod's that i see at work are due to a bad sector on the hard drive if chkdsk says anything about unrecoverable problems, just replace the drive and support your local asshole WoW addicted computer shop owner... just don't pay any more that about $50 flat...
It's actually the windows "start up" process not setup ... Here's some additional details that I left off: - I am trying to get pictures off the hard drive (and other data). - I don't really have details about the hardware due to it's age and the fact that I can't look at the hardware on the computer. I guess I could open it up and give you specs that way but I'm trying not to cause more damage to it then I have to. I talked with Van, TruckMudder, Fuzion last night and formulated this plan: 1. Buy kick ass componets from newegg and build a new computer (Currently I have this old computer, and a laptop that will not be able to realisticly play in DX9). 2. Setup the new computer with either XP or Vista. 3. Once it is up and working, then I'll take the Hard Drive out of my problem child computer and run it as a second hard drive. (I think it was Truck who kept saying the word "slave" over and over ....) 4. Move data as needed from that point, then reformat the slave drive. Thoughts?
