FYI - I gave my laptop to my wife, took apart my very old computer and am going to build a new computer. Here's what I was planning on using to build my new computer: Case: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - $120 Motherboard: MSI P6N SLI-FI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - $107 Videocard(s): EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - $380 Power Supply: COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power RP-650-PCAR ATX from factor 12V V2.01 650W Power Supply 115/230 V Safety Nemko, TUV, cUL, CE, BSMI, FCC, CCC - $100 CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - $227 Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $68 Memory (RAM): Having trouble on this one. Do I need a heat spreader on the RAM? Crucial 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) Desktop Memory - 2 x $120 DVD R/W Drive: Pioneer Black 18X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 10X DVD+R DL 18X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 40X CD-R 32X CD-RW 40X CD-ROM 2MB Cache E-IDE/ ATAPI DVD Burner - $30 Grand total = $1,271.92 Now, from my old computer I am planning on trying to salvage: 1. the Hard Drive - it's 80GB and has data I need ... no not p0rn. 2. Sound card? - Here's what I could see from what I pulled out of my old computer: Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Model: SB0100 Copyright 2001 Trade Name: Creative Labs 3. Also, I have the RAM - should I try to use it or just skip it and go with the 4GB amount? Smart Modular Technologies 512MB, DDR, 266, CL2.5 So, in summary, here's my questions: 1. Does the stuff I am planning on ordering from newegg all look compatable? (ie, will all this shit fit in the case, etc) 2. What do you think of this old sound card? Can I use it? 3. Should I try to salvage the RAM? 4. Is there anything I am missing?
Your choices for RAM, MB, and PS suck... Here is what I would get for roughly the same price (or even cheaper) Patriot RAM FTW! 4GB @ 254.90 Antec TruPower Trio 650W @ 130.00 Seriously, if you are clueless about motherboards, I would recommend intel. If you are patient and aren't afraid to get in the BIOS, I would get an evga board. Get one that supports this chip http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115017 Seriously, you were going to get a dual core for a quad core price??? shame...
I'll take the ram you recommended but don't see a difference in the power supply (other then the one you reference is $30 more). I am clueless about motherboards so I'll stay with Intel but if I switch to your recommended chip then what motherboard should I get?
your old RAM cannot be incorporated into your new build nothing wrong with recycling that Soundblaster card IMO
anyway, just pick one of these that support DDR2 and meets your price range also, dells OEM SB cards suck balls... sell it or throw it in a desk
I wasn't planning on buying a sound card. Still toss it? Also, you said "one of these" ... was their supposed to be a link that I should look at? Thanks for your help guys.
i dunno if you want to hear this or not , but i have always had fantastic luck with asus mobo's. However , at this time, i am not in with whats hot .
So after reading Fuzion's posts I've changed what I'm thinking of getting to: Case: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - $120 Motherboard: EVGA 122-CK-NF67-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i LT SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - $195 (w/$25 mail in rebate) Videocard(s): EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - $380 Power Supply: COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power RP-650-PCAR ATX from factor 12V V2.01 650W Power Supply 115/230 V Safety Nemko, TUV, cUL, CE, BSMI, FCC, CCC - $100 CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - $290 Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $68 Memory (RAM): Patriot eXtreme Performance 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - $255 (w/$20 mail in rebate) DVD R/W Drive: Pioneer Black 18X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 10X DVD+R DL 18X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 40X CD-R 32X CD-RW 40X CD-ROM 2MB Cache E-IDE/ ATAPI DVD Burner - $30 Grand total = $1,438 ($1,393 after rebates) Will this work?
I believe your motherboard needs EPS12V power... http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList....mp;Order=RATING I'd consider a SeaSonic or Antec. Nothing against CoolerMaster, I haven't really used them that much... I always drool over the PC Power and Cooling and SeaSonics but always end up (happy) with the Antecs... Oh, and get 2-4 hard drives and do a RAID array. Every wonder why some people are always in the map first?
Since I am barely able to keep my spousal consent on file in the $1,200 range ... I've reduced my planned purchase ... please let me know if you think there is something cheaper or does not work.... Here's what I am planning on using to build my new computer: Case: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - $120 Motherboard: MSI P6N SLI-FI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - $107 Videocard(s): EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - $380 Power Supply: OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V 700W Power Supply 100 - 240 V - $140 ($35 mail in rebate) CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - $227 Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $68 Memory (RAM): Patriot 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - $185 DVD R/W Drive: PHILIPS 2-Tone 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 20X DVD±R DVD Burner - $35 Grand total = $1,261.92 (that's at the high end of my budget)
Ok, we're going in circles here, so I will be totally honest. By cutting back on the RAID, Memory, and motherboard, you are basically spending all that money on an extra video card that you will NEVER see good performance from. You might as well not even get SLI if your not going to get proper parts to support its best possible performance... Anyway, here are my suggestions to save some mulah. Much cheaper case. I have 2 and they are pretty decent for a cheapo. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811119068 E6750 @ $205 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115029 Go pawn some shit and get this board! You are WASTING your extra video card without it. It runs at a full 16X16 instead of 8X8 like the other boards... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813130080 Pawn some more shit and get the Patriot DDR2 800 or else... And get another 250GB for RAID at the very least. Don't make Tony angry... Again, if you insist on cheaping out on shit, just drop the video card. It is actually going to be the least bang for the buck anyway... RAID!
Ok ... I'll took your recommendation on the CPU since it saved $25, I'm sticking with my RAM, I guess I can do a RAID setup ... I'm going to have two drives but not very big ones. (I'm not a big data guy). - Do I need to buy anything to do a RAID setup. So tell me more about this MOBO. What makes it so much better? Is it the way the PCI express slots will work once I buy a second video card (I'll be buying one later)? Or is it the southbridge? Comparison Thanks for your help!
Good news! I just got word from my previous employer that I am getting a few extra bucks. I'm upgrading the RAM, and MoBo to your recommendations. I plan on sticking with the DUO instead of the Quad though....
RAID isnt so much about the capacity but the total speed of file transfers, etc. I am really glad that your getting the stuff I recommended, I was about to give up on you...
Bought it .... Here's the details .... Code: 1 Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail Item #: N82E16811129021 Standard Return Policy $139.99 $119.99
