fairly certain you have to start over.. but before you do, just copy over the entire "C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles" folder over to the new computer after you installed.. then let us know if you have your rank still..

I just reinstalled Windows...and almost done with COD4. I am about to try "importing" my profile back into COD4...

We shall see. I will keep you guys posted...

    Update:

    YES!!! It worked...

Just move the whole "Player" Folder over to the fresh install and everything is the same. Settings, Ranks, name, etc.

It worked on mine like a charm!

well even if yours works shark, freezie's may not as its a new computer.. new hardware, ect... i heard somewhere that ranks were not held over different computers.. but you can still try..

a reinstall of windows may be fine.. but completely new computer may not.. please do try tho freezie

i can tell you it doesnt work, because when i send my mpdata and profile to my brothers computer, and pasta it there in the player folder. You dont get the ranks. You get an error and it says you have to start from the beginning.

btw. i dont know how it works when you are using the same cd-key... maybe it is cd-key related or something. so if you have a cracked when i think it wont work

ow btw... uhm... maybe it isnt cd-key related because than you would lost your ranks when you put up another cd-key (for the cracked ones)

and now i need a beer :drunk:

Well...there you go Austin...that is your problem. It is most definitely cd-key related. You have to have the same CD key and Profile name. Then it will work.

I think you can see it somewhere ... I remember hearing of a virus that steals CD keys and how they are just in a text file somewhere.

there may be a hardware related crypt in there along with the cdkey
which may be why you can back up and use the same key on the same box and have it work fine...

ah so it must just be cd-key related.

Mine was on a new HDD...so it is completely CD-key related...

Austin: Do you still have access to your primary installation?

    uhm my what?
I have cod4 installed but dont know more, but my brother (Mr. Darkwing..if you have seen him play) said something that the cd-key stays in the register from cod4 or something, he will tell me when he gets back from school.

If you go into your multiplayer options...you can see your entered CD key...just copy that down...reinstall with same CD-key...and then copy your Proflies folder over to the new install...

Obviously your key will not be question marks "?"... :p

In the older version of COD, it was stored in a txt file called codkey.
But I think the 2nd or third COD2 patch did away with that...
Just enbled hidden files and it wasn't there either.
I'll search the registry later and post back

    //EDIT
Cd-Key is stored in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Activision\Call of Duty 4
Click start->Run-> Type regedit Search (ctrl+f) for codkey. Make sure you are in the cod4 hive, and
    not the Cod2 Hive.
You can edit the key and paste the new one in this string.
    Hope this Helps.
