    I have the original WRT54G, not sure of the version off hand (possibly v. 1.3). I got Tomato running on it, and I do like it. But, I am still getting some lag. It might just be going out.

    yea, what butz said. These firmware give you lots of config options which is great if you know what you're doing. Murder, since you said you weren't great with this stuff, I wouldn't bother messing with it if your router is working fine as you could brick your router if you screw up or use the wrong version firmware.
