Help Needed !

hi guys ,
we'll i'm new here as u can all guess ...but not only new to this forum ...also new to the whole COD4 MP thing ..so far i've only played it in SP mode. And now when i wanted to try out the MP mode i stumbled into alot of problems ...and i was hoping u guys might be able to help me out with some advice ...at least

i've installed the game (v1.0 with PunkBuster) ...patched it all the way to v1.7 ...started the game , added a couple of IPs to the Fav. list and when i tryed to connect it was telling me "This server is running different version: 1.7" (which i think its really stupid since i had the same version) ...so i've uninstalled / re-installed the game but this time without PunkBuster, patched it AGAIN all the way to v1.7 ...started the game / added a couple of IPs to Favorites and when i click on them to connect it tells me "CodKey in use. Please try again later" or something like that ...so i've tryed changing the serial from registry :

Start > Run > regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Activision\Call of Duty 4 ...and changed the key a few times ..but still no luck.

Do you guys have any idea what the problem might be ???

I read something about needing to apply a "private server fix patch" ...or something like that. Where can i find this patch ?
Could it be that the cracked iw3mp.exe i used wasn't good ?

PLEASE HELP ME OUT ! I DESPERATLY WANT TO TRY OUT THIS GAME IN MULTIPLAYER MODE !

PS: here are some details about my computer (in case it might be usefull)

CPU: E8400
RAM: 3GB Dual Chanel
Graphic card: 9800 GTX (with the latest oficial drivers)
OS: XP Professional SP3

private server patch is for server side only

replace any patched files and start over


try manually joining a game by hitting the ~ key

then copy and paste this into the console


/connect 72.249.94.147:28960


it sounds like your having trouble finding a valid key to use as well


Im running mine "un-fixed" so if Ive missed something someone else will be along here shortly to slap my balls

when i registered with this forum i got a message from the admin notifing me that u guys are running COD4 v1.5 so i reinstalled and updated to 1.5.
right now i just tryed to connect through the console like you said but it still tells me that "the server is running a different version: 1.7"

now , just to make sure im on the same page with you ...tell me pls ...the server IP u gave me what version does it run on ?

..just to be clear ..i'm running COD 4 v1.5.549 (at least that's what it sais in the bottom right corner of the Main Menu screen)

and i dont know if i mentioned this and i dunno if its relevand ...the patches i'm using have been downloaded from gameshell (sorry for the advertising) ...and they seem to be the oficial game patches.

should i try patching with some sort of cracked / hacked / modified patch ???

ok ..this is crap !
i managed to make it work somehow ...i've been able to connect to a couple of games but the problem is that for most of the IP's i tryed out, it told me "PunkBuster needs to be enabled to connect to this server" ...so i turned P.Buster on and it worked ..i played for 2 min then P.Buster kicked me off the server ....soooo what i was wondering ...these serveres that require P.Buster , are they oficial servers or cracked servers ?
...aaaand ...where could i find a list of cracked servers that DONT require P.Buster ????

go to evenbalance.com and download the latest client files

be sure to follow the install instructions and save as .htm to your PB folder inside COD4

that will make sure you dont get the PB kick

they update every now and then and even with auto download enabled you will need to do this from time to time as they issue patches


stay away from non PB servers unless you enjoy a hackers paradise environment

Uninstall the game.
Reinstall with Punkbuster turned ON.
Patch to 1.6, then to 1.7 (it is an incremental patch, not a full one).

Our servers are running version 1.7.

What Punkbuster error are you getting (exact message or a screenshot please)?

if it said "key code in use" that means that you have a fake cod 4..... all u have to do is get an IP for a (cracked server)
