I have a 120gb SSD(even if it was a 1 TB, question still valid). Many program installation packages default to the C: drive, without providing an option to install it elsewhere. Is editing the registry a sufficient way to change this, or will items within the program still write to C:? What's the solution?
what programs wont let you install to other than c:? sometimes you have to select custom installation, or some other option during installation. Or in the case of BF3, you have to go into Origin, select the directory you want to install to on the other drive. Then you can copy the files to that other directory, and when you "install" it will just do a file verification, but look like its installing. Any program created within the last 5-10 years will have the ability to install to other than c: or shouldnt require registry entries.
I found my software keys and removed the installation. It really freed a lot of space on C: and E:. I'll download and carefully reinstall it this afternoon. Thank you.
On a side note, you definately want to use a SSD as your windows drive. I have 2 128GB SSDs now, but before I had windows 7 x64 (~20gig), BF3 (another 20gig or so) and 1 other game that I would play a lot. Leave at least 25% of it free to keep writting speed high. It is deffinitely worth any pain in the ass complete reinstall hastle.
yeah, part of the PFM of SSDs that they dont advertise, is that it assumes a 25% free space to maintain those high write speeds. Trade off for the technology to make SSDs last long
Some guys are loading BF4 faster than others. All are on ssd's. Make sure the drive is connected to the native SATA 6Gb/s ports on the motherboard. And go into the BIOS and make sure the SATA port for that drive is set to AHCI mode instead of IDE mode. If its not, you can change it, but hit the Googles to find out how to do it correctly.
