Do browser settings (Firefox) affect Origin and BF3 game play, or is it more TCP/IP config? Router, computer, firewall? My shit runs good, but the BF3 session timeout is frustrating. What is the reason a BF3 server thinks I'm away mid game?:gives:, am I right?
it's your connection (and all subsequent connections) from your house to the game server... there's a ton of shit in between.
Browner, I've tried most options that are available with routers, firewalls and the like. I'm trying to get a deeper understanding of what causes it. When the error message says I "timed out", I'd like to know why. There was a lot of fuss about these settings in forumfield a few weeks ago. ^^Those are my current settings. Here's one article that references the settings: http://www.speedguide.net/articles/windows-7-vista-2008-tweaks-2574 They say change them and give recommended settings, and then say, "But it might fuck your shit up, too." And the article referenced was in 2008. Fuck, I was 14 in 2008, I think. And Kr0me, I get about 10 hops to the server. Can any settings be set to say, "Hey, I'm in the middle of a game here. Don't disconnect my shit!"
Whilst broadband is termed as always-on, drops in the PPP connection are par for the cause. The nature of the network type, especially when served on mass, means that connections "will be seen", but not specifically "expected". This simply means you have had a disconnection without you prompting it in any way, such as a reboot or use of a disconnect. It's not possible for your session to suddenly jump gateways without loss of the PPP link to your router. If your connection counter suggests it is greater than on our side, this may indicate a reporting issue in the router. Whilst this could be classed as a bug, it doesn't strictly mean it's faulty (unless reporting accuracy is a must for you)
I'd go old school top-down, Bone. Have you tried placing your gaming rig in the DMZ of your network? Look it up. Most routers allow you to place an interNAT IP in the DMZ. For instance, here is where you would do it on my router: http://support.dlink.com/emulators/dir655/121/Firewall.html Have you tried swapping out the router with another one? Have you tried direct connecting to your DSL/cable modem (this is not a long term solution in any regard, due to security)? If you get the same results, then I would move onto your NIC. try buying a cheap PCI NIC off newegg and slap it in your machine. Many of the onboard NICs I have dealt with in the past were less then reliable. You could try one of these or a variant: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833106121 If you are still having problems, move to your software and OS (i.e., AV). I hope this helps.
Thanks Shark. To clarify, I'm only getting occasional (once a week) disconnects from Bf3 servers. Which I guess is going to happen to anyone anywhere, no matter what. So, this isn't an emergency. Just trying to optimize (maybe shoot that guy before he shoots me) while staying secure. For now, I've forwarded the correct ports for BF3. That is one thing I never configured, so we'll see what happens. I've tried to change DNS service, but the trace route stays the same. It hits mediacom first, regardless of win 7, or router settings. I'm using a modem provided by mediacom, so there you go.
BF3 has a 3rd server that you connect to that has issues (the one that tracks stats etc). This server causes all sorts of shit, that causes servers to go down, stats not to track, and disconnects. The past few days I have had issues even connecting to servers because this connection was having issues.
Those just mean that that server does not respond to ping requests. This is not uncommon. Those probably have nothing to do with your problems. Your connection to the game server is good, but Bender probably knows what the server for stats is called (I think its a fire based name because it was created by flaming homos). To get any real data for your conection to the game server or a hop between, you will need to run that program the whole time in the background for a much longer period.
You will hit mediacom first no matter what. They are your isp, so your modem will hit them first no matter what. DNS service basically just converts names into ip addresses aka yahoo.com in your browser and you connect to 200.11.32.12 (made up number). The ip addresses are more or less hard coded to the physical equipment, but the name can be linked to whatever location.
So would using Google DNS 8.8.8.8 as my primary, in my router settings change anything for me? I haven't found a way to confirm that it does anything. Results are the same.
bf3 possible help just some shit to read it might help SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS GO and check if your machine is capable of running this game . There is a site that you can check out your pc on . http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/intro.aspx. Make sure you actually check this out b4 you buy the game . Please dont come crying on the forum if your pc just is not powerful enough . WINDOWS Next there is some hidden requirements .Widows vista must be updated to service pack 2 . Also you must have the KB971512 platform update installed . Some have reported issues with windows 7 . TO be safe make sure both platforms are fully updated . PORT FORWARDING For game server connection dropping problems make sure you port forward your router . UDP 3659 UDP 6000 TCP 9946 TCP 42100 TCP 13000 -> 13100 PUNKBUSTER UPDATES Punkbuster needs sometimes to be updated . So go to The pb website and download the manual installer . Put it into a folder and then run it . Check the manual updater on a regular basis for update . PATCH ISSUES Patches have been launched and gave immediate errors when the game was updated . Make sure after each patch you right click on the game icon in origin then click on repair install . Once done restart origin . FPS AND DIRECT X issues some people have been suffering from FPS and DX issues on overclocked graphy cards . Reset them to normal values and it should run fine . By normal values i mean the cards standard clock values . Some cards come pre overclocked , If you have issues with these uderclock them to the standard cards values . DRIVERS Drivers seem to be the biggest issue with this game . DO NOT USE WINDOWS UPDATE . Download your drivers from the vendor of your hardware . This game will not run unless you have the latest Graphics drivers installed . Also some people have reported sound driver problem . So install the newest sound drivers aswell . If you still have sound issues some have reported that disabling the HDaudio drivers and you should be good to go . Make sure you properly install drivers . Un-install the drivers b4 installing new drivers . restart your pc then reinstall the new drivers . The main driver issue with any game is people not installing their drivers properly . BF3.exe Sometimes when you get dropped from a server you cant get back into a game . For some reason Battle log tells you its playing so when you launch the window it crashes back to the desktop . The BF3.exe basically crashed without any usual windows notification sound . Close the error box and restart again it will run fine again for a while . I have yet to find a fully working fix for this error . BF3 GRAPHICS EDITOR Thanks to THE SHAPE for finding this . http://bf3.realmware.co.uk/ It was created by tehfusion and Insanecrimsontid . It also is not in breach of the tos since it does not launch or run the game outside of ORIGIN . ORIGIN FIX Error Upon launch an error message appears stating "Could Not Activate" . Possible Solution One workaround is to delete the BF3 license file to to force a license update. First Workaround 1. Exit Origin completely. You can do this by right-clicking Origin in your system tray (near the clock) and selecting "Exit" 2. Open Internet Explorer (this will only work with Internet Explorer, not other browsers). Enter the following address into your address bar and press "Enter/Return" C:\ProgramData\Electronic Arts\EA Services\License 3. Delete the file named either 71067.dlf or 70619 or 71069.dlf 4. Restart your machine. 5. Launch Origin and login to your Origin account. 6. Attempt to launch Battlefield 3 Second Workaround 1. Exit Origin completely. You can do this by right-clicking Origin in your system tray (near the clock) and selecting "Exit" 2. Open Internet Explorer (this will only work with Internet Explorer, not other browsers). Enter the following address into your address bar and press "Enter/Return" C:\ProgramData\Origin\DownloadCache 3. Delete the files in this directory 4. Restart your machine. 5. Launch Origin and login to your Origin account. 6. Attempt to launch Battlefield 3
bf3 settings This workaround was put on the EA forums by ea themselves . This a workaround until they can sort out a permanent fix for this problem . GRAPHICS CARDS issues Some people have noticed that graphics cards are unstable while running the game . GPU hitching and a general kick up of the gpu . Underclocking the corp clock speed by 100mhz seems to fix this problem . Green flickering issue Its been recommended to turn down the graphics settings . The green flickering can somtimes actually be caused by a lack of VRAM on your graphics card. Download MSI afterburner and check to see how much VRAM is being used at your current settings. green flickers with ultra + 4xMSAA, drop it down to 2xMSAA and it should disappear. SERVER TIMED OUT ISSUE From the EA forum post by DJUNGLEJARL 1. Press: Windows-button (the one between lAlt and lCtrl) + R, a window should pop up. 2. Write: "services.msc" (without the ") then press enter. 3. In the list of services, scroll down to "UPnP Device Host", click it and press "Stop service". 4. Now do the same thing but with the service "SSDP Discovery". 5. Exit the window and go to control panel-> Network and Internet-> Network and Sharing Centre-> Change advanced sharing settings (to the left)-> Under "network discovery" select to turn off network discovery 6. SAVE CHANGE Fix 2 . I have noticed that repairing the install and restarting origin after every update helps with this problem . The last update EA sent out left me hanging in game for 30 seconds then booted me with the time out error . Closed my browser then repaired the install and restarted origin. IT worked ever since . FIX 3 thx to MaintenanceMan for noticing this . Some routers have UPNP enabled by default . Go to your router setting and disable it . If the above steps have not worked this should work . I have not tested the 1st one sine repairing the install worked for me . All the other issues i had and tested out everything worked fine let me know about this fix for the server timeout issue . Browser issues Some info on the browsers and noticeable issues GOOGLE CHROME . If you have the minimum amount of ram to run the game i suggest using another browser . GOOGLE CHROME does use a lot of ram compared to other browsers . That said people have noticed slightly higher fps than when using Firefox FIREFOX . There seems to be fps issues when using this browser . That said if your system is running the game with the minimum amount of ram its the best choice as that is the only issue anyone has with Firefox . IE9 . A lot of people at the moment are complaining about IE9 causing problems with the game . Thay are getting around to fixing this issue but it maybe a while b4 microsoft has IE9 patched up . Alternatively you can somehow roll back to IE8 or use another browser altogether . Chrome or Firefox at the moment seem to be the best choice out of the browsers . Until Microsoft release fixes for IE9 OR ea manage to patch up the game to work these are your only real choices . BF3 Crash to desktop Thanks to SystemiK for finding this *******************32BIT ONLY - USERS*********************** I've been having the crash problem - games in MP crashing in ~5mins, and SP crashing every so often. Found the solution from another game actually where I was having a similar problem - Empire: Total War. BE AWARE, THIS IS ONLY A WORKAROUND - THE ISSUE STILL NEEDS TO BE FIXED. THIS IS A FIX FOR THOSE RUNNING 32BIT WINDOWS 7 AND WINDOWS VISA WITH 4GB RAM OR MORE. From here on, I'm copy-pasting the instructions. This works for both Vista and W7. Got me through 20mins of MP for the first time though - longest game I've had. Haven't tested for longer. What does it do? It has to do two things that both rely on each other to work. For 32 bit operating systems we have to tell the operating system it can use more than 2GB user address space, 2.5GB actually, while leaving 1.5Gb for the kernel. We also have to set the Empire.exe executable to be allowed to address beyond the 2GB ceiling. 64 bit OS users don't have to do anything. What does it help with? This is not the solution for all crashes. It deals primarily with the crash to desktop that is caused by lack of virtual address space.Due to the unique nature of how addresses are mapped differently on each machine this crash may happen at different places and times of the game, even loading a map, menu or waiting on an AI turn. If you try this fix, and you follow directions properly, and it doesn't help you then your crash is due to something else. How do I do it? Follow directions explicitly. I have seen people consistently skip steps or not read the directions properly so it doesn't work for them whne they don't do what it says. it's not as complicated as it sounds, I'm just being thorough. APPLY THE WORKAROUND (juicy caramel center) Requirements Only real requirements is that you have atleast 2GB RAM. You don't need beyond that even though we are allowing addressing up to 2.5 GB. Also following instructions and being somewhat familiar with working with files in windows is required. Make sure you are using Vista SP1. If not then you need this hotfix that fixes a major blunder with Vista address space - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105 [support.microsoft.com] That's all, follow the 3 steps. 1) Prepare the operating system to be able to use beyone 2GB address space with a userva of 2.5GB (only 32 bit OS's need to do this): I am purposely using only 2500 for userva for specific reasons and any more will likely not be needed, as a result the kernel will have plenty of space to play in. All 64 bit OS's Nothing to do on the OS. Proceed to step 2 on setting the executable. 64 bit OS's running 32 bit binaries are also limited to 2GB application space. XP 32 * Find your Boot.ini located usually on the C:. If you cannot see it, you probably have system files hidden, then follow these instructions at microsoft (also uncheck "hide protected operating system files") * Right click on the boot.ini and choose properties. Uncheck "read only" * Open the boot.ini by double clicking it. * Under the section called find the line that says "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Wind ows XP Professional...". Yours may look a bit different. We are going to make a duplicate, so that if you make a mistake you will not harm yourself from booting into your computer. Drag you're mouse across the entire line, right click and choose copy. Then right below the line you just copied right click your mouse and choose paste. You should now have two lines one after another that are exact duplicates. * Change the bottom line that you just copied with the following addition on the end. Add a space at the end of the line and then this without the quotes "/3GB /USERVA=2500" * In that lower boot entry you just made, find the name of the operating system in quotes and change it to something like "Windows XP 3GB", so you can differentiate at boot up. * Close and save the boot.ini. * Right click on the boot.ini, hit properties, check read only. Windows 7/Windows Vista * In Windows 7/Vista go to Start menu. Go to Accessories. Locate the command prompt shortcut and hover mouse over it. Right Click on the shortcut then select Run as Administrator. * In the command prompt type this exactly: bcdedit /set increaseuserva 2500. Then hit enter. * Make sure you get a message back confirming the change was made. To verify the entry is there you can type just bcdedit, hit enter, and you should see the entry now listed. * Then close the command prompt. You just told Vista to increase user virtual address (userva) space to 2500MB. * Changes take effect on reboot but don't reboot yet. SUMMARY We extended the user virtual address space in XP, Vista and 7 to 2500MB, so now applications can utilize up to that much if they are set to be Large Address Aware. While some 32 bit games/applications are set, Empire is not. 2) Now reboot the PC because Windows needs to set the userva at 2500 which only happens after startup. If you skip any step it will not work. When you have rebooted you should be good to go. Run the game as normal with the original game shortcut. TO UNDO THE CHANGES For the XP 32 bit just delete the line from your boot.ini. For Vista 32 Open command prompt as administrator and type: bcdedit /deletevalue increaseuserva. That deletes the entry. Reboot and you are back to normal.
bf3 possible fixes OPTIMIZE WINDOWS FOR GAMING VISTA AND WIN 7 easiest optimization here is disabling the visual themes . Right click on your desktop go to personalization and then themes . Click on the classic theme and it will reduce some of the resources windows uses to run the fancy wallpapers , icons and toolbars . WEB APPS AND TOOLBARS Uninstall website toolbars from your browser . Even if you think as long as i am not using them they are always running . They do increase resource usage and are nothing more than malware most of the time . GAME BOOSTER . Its an alternative to an advanced step that i am oing to put next . It basically shuts down all non essential programs just to play games . Its easy and simple to use .http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html Just download and install it . It is a free program but there is more advanced options for those that buy the software . The free version is good enough . The more advanced users can close down the programs that they dont need to launch at windows startup by using msconfig . However be careful with the processes and programs you shut down as it could cause catastrophic system crashes . There is a guide HERE Anti virus . Finally there is anti virus programs . Make sure your games EXE is allowed to connect through the antivirus software . If you still get a lot of lag then disable the anti virus temporarily . people complain about lag alot in some game . Usually because the antivirus is strangling the connection to the games exe . If this is the case then disable it while playing games . JOYSTICK < MOUSE AND KEYBOARD BINDINGS ISSUE . Originally Posted by 1ceTr0n Ok, I have having horrendous issues with my Logitech extreme 3d pro working with BF3 since launch. Whata joke, and who knows when they will get it "working" Anyway, with some input from others online and in game, I decided to test the following method and I can confirm IT DOES FIX joystick issues, at least on the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Here's what to do: 1. Load CAMPAIGN mode and then OPTIONS / Key Bindings to adjust your controls. Do this so your not sitting around like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥, taking up server space and getting booted in multiplayer, its being polite! 2. Go through Infantry/Vehicle controls and clear out ALL JOYSTICK settings/buttons/axis. This will take some time, but its the only way to assure it will work properly. SET MOUSE/KEYBOARD settings as you see fit 3. Go through Jets/Helicopters and clear out EVERY SINGLE BUTTON/AXIS for Mouse, Keyboard. Again, this is very tedious but its necessary for this to work. 4. Once you have cleared out the settings as indicated above, exit game, install your joystick and calibrate with Windows or whatever software is necessary for your joystick 5. Reload game, Go back to CAMPAIGN then OPTIONS / Key Bindings and set your axis/buttons for your jet and helicopter as you see fit. GO THROUGH EACH JOYSTICK BUTTON/AXIS and RE BIND or Clear it out as every joystick button layout is different. With my Logitech extreme 3D, every single button needed to be remapped for it to work, but YMMV! Be sure to save often in case you screw up!! That should take care of it. Load up multiplayer and you should now have control in the skies! Happy flying!!
