Ok, I am going to MicroCenter tomorrow to buy a new GPU and CPU ... maybe some ram too .... Here are my current (broken) specs: EVGA Nvidia 8800 GTS - most likely dead Antec 900 Case MSI P6N Diamond MoBo some fancy gaming power supply (700W) Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66G 2Gx2 Patriot Ram Can I just leave the ram in and get two more 2G sticks? No clue on which GPU to get. The evga one lasted quite a while though (since Aug 2007) under extensive use. This looks like a good price: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_...duct_id=0330706
So you did get that link before you disappeared into computer nothingness You can't use that chip with your current board, it's a completely different socket and chipset. You would need to upgrade your mainboard and RAM to use that chip. Luckily there is some crazy good deals going on right now. Pick up that i7 960 from Microcenter (the deal is only good for in store purchase). Order one of these b-stock X-58 boards from EVGA (either the EVGA X-58 $89 or the EVGA X-58LE $79 shipped). Either a GTX470 $179 or GTX570 $279 from EVGA B-Stock (just pay the additional $10 for the lifetime warranty). Personally I would go with the 570 is packs a significant punch. Corsair XMS3 RAM kit. These are some crazy good deals (that CPU not to long ago was $600) and would be a significant improved over just upgrading your existing processor. If you just wanted to upgrade your existing CPU now I would go with something along the lines of a Q9550 or Q9650. You could upgrade your CPU and get one of the suggested cards above (keep in mind though that Intel i7 960 will be more than twice as fast and half the cost compared to one of those Q9000's). I hope that helps, shoot away with questions if you need to Edit: I just saw your last post, the 560 is a good card but I would go with the 560Ti or any of the 560's that offer the 384 Cuda cores compared to the 336 of the regular 560.
Wife aggro ..... I can't have boxes coming and going. This has got to be done in one stop. Hence, why i am thinking of getting the 560 TI at lunch. I do not want to change the MoBo right now. WHat CPU and ram can I get at MicroCenter? Basically, I need to come home with one bag and one price. Saying "Honey, I bought that part I needed to fix the computer" once is very important.... Last night I read that my MoBo uses DDR2 ram. Can I get a simple 2G addon for something cheap? Basically, using the 560Ti card, what CPU and ram should I get at MicroCenter? Edit: Here is my existing memory: http://patriotmemory.com/products/detailp....=593&type=1 so can I buy this and add them to the existing 2Gx2? http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_...duct_id=0326686 I see what you are saying about the CPU though. The MoBo supports only LGA 775, so the best option at MicroCenter is an E7500 for $90. Is that even worth upgrading? I'm thinking I should get the Q9650 from newegg. If that is the only other box that arrives, I think she will understand .... so here's where I am at now: - Buy 560Ti and 2Gx2 ram from Micro Center at lunch. Replace tonight. - Order Q9650 from newegg - later if needed - maybe once BF2 comes out.
Just got the "I need $400 for new brakes" call so, I am really thinking I just want to get a new video card at Micro today and see if I get back to where I was.
According to the MoBo user guide the video card slots are "PCI Express x16 slots" ..... does that mean it will not interface with PCIe 2.0 and PCIe 2.1? Found this post: <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div> So .... it looks like this card will work: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_...duct_id=0356463 or I could spend $40 and build a whole new computer later .... Will this work? http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_...duct_id=0365384 That $40 card is actually better than my now dead card. Also, I figured out why my card died .... DX11 when it says it supports DX10 ...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Adogg @ Jun 21 2011, 09:03 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div> PCIe x16 just refers to the lane size or connector size of the device. There is x1, x2, x4, x8, x12, x16, and x32 lane size PCIe devices/slots and for the most part they're backwards compatible. Meaning that a x8 PCie device will function in a x16 lane on a motherboard. PCe 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, ect refers to what protocol standard of PCI-Express the devices or board is functioning on. This is also backwards compatible for the most part, so a PCIe 2.0 card will function in a PCIe 1.0 lane on a mainboard. I wouldn't even mess with that GT card, it;s more geared for HTPC use and wont do you justice when trying to play games like BF. I would go with this 560ti, better price and cooler.
What about the $40 card? This should get me back to where I was, right? http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_...duct_id=0365384 All the stats are better than my previous card and I can go pick it up today. My plan is to than buy a whole new MoBo, CPU, GPU and ram after this one can not work. That might be this fall or it might be later.
I wouldn't waste your $40 on it. I just saw your above posts about RAM kits. Don't mix RAM kits, get one kit with the same specs, chips and timings that suits your needs. But if you already have 4GB of RAM that is plenty for normal gaming.
hope you have more willpower than me in MicroCenter... I think I left a load in aisle 12... probably got alot of people pregnant...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (kr0me @ Jun 21 2011, 02:10 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div> Barely, .... I totally wanted to play Crysis 2 on the demo they had out....
Bwahahaha .... well my wife just spent $417 on brakes so that was an incentive to go for the duck tape option...
