let's say I had my PC mailed to me. Ok, now i need to connect it to the Net. The only immediately available connection is the wireless that I access through my laptop. My desktop does not have a wireless adapter. of course, i happen to have a crossover cable from out of my ass. I connect the 2 machines. wlan0 is set for DHCP, usually giving me a 192.168.1.106 addy, and eth0 is static set for 192.168.0.1. WinXP machine is static at .0.100, gateway pointed to .0.1. WinXP machine can ping Ubuntu, and access web server through Http. (ftp isnt working for some reason) Ubuntu cannot ping winXP, but who cares right now. What the fuck else do I have to do on this linux box to get it to share it's internet connection. Yes, I'd like to get high speed net soon, but it depends on the landlords. uhhh, can i take the PC card out of the laptop and plug it into the desktop somehow...? I work when the computer store is open, else i'd buy a new adapter.
pc card I actually have a PCMCIA to PCI adapter... Very neat looking but I dont know the specs, like if its a 16bit cardbus or whatever kind of PC card you have... or even more important if linux will see it... ill figure it out tommorow. //edit Im sure you've seen this but anyway here it is... http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=91370
yea, i had a look at that. The only thing is: apparently in the 2 HOURS it took to install on this old laptop, somethng got screwed up. The main thing is there is no root account... yea yea, i know..."how is this possible?" I still have a super user account to toy with things, but when it comes to doing that stuff...zilch. The PC card is in the machine running linux. I made it find it, even tho the bitch at the computer store said "oh, you mean Linnnnnux...ugh, no, these are only compatible with windows" and she then walked away. I kid you not, she walked away. I hate the fact it takes a fucking week to do the simplest things here sometimes. The landlords better fucking agree with highspeed internet. "oh 768kbps split over 6 computers is fine" with 32kbps up...uh, no it's not fine. $67/month will get me 8/1mbps, with a $150 installation. thank god i have my own cable modem, even tho im sure the cable company will push theirs to the point of saying "oh, yours isnt compatible, buy ours for $120" Now, if you excuse me, i have to go mow lawns for the next 10 hours...hello overtime!
What are the rest of the TCP settings? ip: Subnet Mask: Default Gateway: should be the ip of the lan adapter your cross over cable is plugged into. not the gateway of the router etc. Also do you have a CD bootable copy of linux? Like Knoppix, or DSL (damn Small Linux)? try to connect with these before dumping your OS.
No, no copies of linux handy. network settings: wlan0: static: IP: 192.168.1.109 SUbnet 255.255.255.0 broadcast: 192.168.1.255 Gateway: 192.168.1.1 eth0: IP: 192.168.0.1 subnet: 255.255.255.0 gateway: blank on my PC: static: IP: 192.168.0.100 gateway: 192.168.0.1 dns: blank subnet: 255.255.255.0 PC can ping and connect to laptop. something about IP forwarding needed? I have firestarter which is supposed to have a script for ICS, but when I start it up I get a "failed to start firewall, check network setings" error.
ive seen n00bs delete root on linspire. foolproof my aching ass. that adapter card was crap. like 10 years old... everywhere ive looked on the net suggests using firestarter i guess fixing root would be first priority here... according to google deleting root is really fuckin easy on a mac
