I have an old HP notebook PC. 800mhz Celeron processor with windows 98 installed on it. 9gb HDD and 128mb RAM. The battery is toast and if you look at the bottom, you can see a little 3" x 3" square that's all warped up due to heat. Anywho, my question is "Will is run XP if I do a format?" What's that little warped-up square? and can I replace it? My goal is to have some kind of computer with internet access while I'm away for the next few months. I have a cell phone that I could possibly use with a data cable as a modem. Or, what else is there? thanks -E
For pure speed and Stability, I recommend Win2K, Very Small Footprint (on Your HDD), Uses small amounts of ram, And Is quite Stable. X
once again, give me the exact model of your laptop, and i will search for second hand upgrades....lappy ram is dirt cheap, and im sure i can find at least a 40gigger for you. im in the process of trading/upgrading, and the people im doing it with have everything, i imagine if bartering comes to a standstill, when i cant get what i want for my stuff, ill just ask for some of the stuff you may require.
I went with what was immediately available to me, and that was Ubuntu Linux. Haha. Sure took a long time to install, and yea it won't run cod2, but this laptop wouldn't run it anyways. HP Omnibook XE3 I wouldn't mind more memory, and I definitely need some super cooling or to pull the HDD and use an external, because it gets so riculously hot so quick, I can't rest it in my lap. battery's shot a long time ago. I'm going to move a crap load of music, web-apps and web-related files over. Ummm, now i need to find out how to get ventrilo to work on it...crap...
hmmmm, i dont think theres much for cooling, an external hd is a good idea, and i dont see why vent wouldnt work. P.S. just rob someone once your there, then you can get a computer for free!!!
Ok, have the laptop pretty much ready to go except there are several files I would like to transfer to it from my desktop. I have a working crossover ethernet cable and both systems recognize the other. No idea what I have to do in order to actually transfer files between the two. Google will be my instructor this afternoon. I was just wondering if anyone already had a link to a qick tutorial or could just say: "hey, elmo, set IPs to this, do this, edit this, use this program" I have more data than will fit on a CD, and I guess I'd like to learn how to do it this way. Yea, basically just learning a new trick.
Step 1, Make sure they are in the same workgroup. Step 2 Share a folder on the laptop Step 3 Go to "My Network Places" on the desktop. The share should automatically show up. Unless the PC's both have different OS's. Then you are into file system differences. Then step 1 is, put data to be transferred on an external HDD, or DVD. Insert dvd in OmniBook, Copy data. //EoM OR put laptop HDD in Desktop (you'll need a converter cable for this), Copy data to HDD. Replace HDD in Laptop. //Eo2M X
Thanks xpider. Yea, diff OS's. I know it's possible using open ssh or maybe even telnet. er smaba. I need to take a break for the night tho. The oppposite thing happened than I thought would... The WinXP machine can find the ubuntu machine, but linux says "hello? anyone there?" I'm fairly certain linux could handle the NTFS, XP uses.
host a small ftp server on the laptop, BulletProof FTP should have an IX compile, then just ftp (Using IP of server) the data you require, through the X-Over cable. I should have thought of that before *Note to self = Dumbass*. That should be easier. X
Wow, use linux as a ftp server? Make me one of those "Dumbass" Notes too. Good thinking Xpider, Thanks -E
